    Stone Color: Turritella is earthy brown and usually has specks of color, eye markings, bands, stripes, or fossilized inclusions. Turritella is easily recognized by the fossilized snail and sea creature patterns in the stone.

    Stone Origin: About 50 million years ago silt would fall from the mountains on to the shells at the bottom of mountain streams, fossilizing the shells in stone. The term Turritella came from the assumption that the fossilized snails were of the Turritella genus, the snails fossilized in the Turritella were actually Elimia tenera, the name Turritella however stuck. In ancient Mesopotamia, stones of agate were engraved with seals. Ancient Romans used agate to create mortar and pestles to grind their medicines.
