    Color: Sardonyx can be black or reddish-black with white bands. Green Sardonyx is green with white bands. Sometimes the banding is zebra-striped banding.

    Stone Origin: The name Sardonyx is derived from two Greek words "sard" meaning reddish-brown and "onyx" meaning veined gem. The oldest known reference to Sardonyx is an 11th century lapidary, a text which describes sardonyx. Sardonyx was believed to be one of the twelve Biblical Foundation Stones listed in Revelations XXI. Each of the Sardonyx stones were said to be carved with the name of one of the Apostles. Sardonyx can be traced back thousands of years in Ancient Egypt. In addition, in Ancient Rome cameos of Venus, the Goddess of Love, were made of Sardonyx. Roman soldiers, often wore sardonyx rings carved with images of Mars, the God of War, as a means of protection.
