Best Time to Find Sea Glass

When is the Best Time to Find Sea Glass?

Blue Sea Glass

The best time to find sea glass depends on a few factors, including the tides, weather conditions, and the location where you are searching. Here are some tips to help you find sea glass:
  1. Check the tides: Sea glass is often easier to find at low tide when more of the beach is exposed. Research the tide schedule for the area you plan to search and try to go at low tide.

  2. Tidal extremes: Extreme high and low tides can often result in sea glass being unearthed. Pay particular attention to times where the tides are at their highest or lowest.

  3. Check the weather: Overcast or cloudy days can make it easier to spot sea glass on the beach since the colors stand out against the muted backdrop.

  4. Choose the right location: Some beaches are known to have more sea glass than others. Look for beaches with rocky or pebbly shores, as these areas are more likely to have sea glass.

  5. Be patient: Finding sea glass is often a matter of luck and persistence. Keep your eyes peeled and be patient, and you may be rewarded with a beautiful piece of sea glass.

  6. After Storms: After big ocean storms or anything that "stirs" up the ocean and the typical ocean patterns will often cause sea glass to be "unearthed" or tossed ashore.   Storms often push long-buried items into the light, so there’s a heightened possibility of finding older, higher-quality pieces or unusual colors along storm-tossed shores.  Ocean storms or hurricanes in particular create a churning motion in the water, which often washes up debris trapped in the seafloor, anything that disturbs the typical currents or wave patterns may unearth sea glass treasures.

  7. Look in remote or hard-to-reach areas: The more remote and difficult to access a beach is, the more likely you are to find rare and unusual sea glass.

  8. Consider the color: While most sea glass is green or brown, rarer colors like red, yellow, and purple can be found in certain areas. Research the color you are looking for and the regions where it is more likely to be found.

  9. Join a sea glass hunting group: There are many online communities and social media groups dedicated to sea glass hunting. Joining one of these groups can provide you with helpful tips and information on where to find rare and unusual sea glass.

  10. Visit historical sites: Beaches near historical sites, such as old shipwrecks or abandoned coastal towns, are often great places to find unique and rare sea glass.

Remember to always be respectful of the environment and any local regulations when collecting sea glass.
