Stone Origin: Agate has one of the longest histories of any healing stone. It is included in almost every known lapidary, which describe stones/minerals and their powers. Archaeological evidence indicates Agate have been used since the very earliest times. Agates have been found in many Stone Age graves. Lapidaries, dating from 3000 BC, referenced seals, rings, beads, and other ornaments that were carved from Agate. The name “Agate” was first used by the Greek writer Theophrastus, suggesting that Agate was found near came from a Sicilian River then called the Achates River, (now known as the Dirillo River). Ancient Romans valued the Agate for its reputed medicinal and talismanic properties. Powdered and mixed with water, the Romans thought it would counteract serpents' venom. There are legends that tell us that Persian magicians used Agate to divert unwanted storms. Ancient sailors thought that agate amulets would provide protection from surging ocean waves. Agate has a history of divinely revealed images within its natural veining, inclusions and markings. It is believed that images as representing Virgin Mary, Jesus, John the Baptist, and angels have manifested themselves in agate, and are displayed in churches and museums around the world.
