    Dark Sea Glass

    Black sea glass is made from glass that contains manganese dioxide, which is a compound of manganese and oxygen. Manganese dioxide is a dark, purple-black mineral that was once commonly used as a decolorizing agent in the production of glass. When it was added to the molten glass mixture, it would react with the iron oxide (a common impurity in glass) to produce a black or very dark purple color.
     
    Black sea glass is relatively rare and is often highly prized by collectors. It is often found in shades of black or very dark purple, although lighter shades of these colors are also possible.
