    Stone Color: Malachite is light to dark green or nearly black. Malachite's green color comes from copper. Malachite is usually banded and may have eye-like rings, these markings are known as "peacock's eye".

    Stone Origin: Malachite comes from a Greek word, though it is unclear weather it is derived from "mallow" due to it's color resemblance to the mallow leaf or from "malakos" which means soft. Malachite is a relatively soft stone when compared to other minerals. Malachite was used in a number of ancient civilizations. Ancient Egyptians as early as 4000 BC used malachite pharaos wore malachite on their heads to increase their wisdom. Ancient Egyptians also ground it into powder to make eyeshadow. Greeks and Romans, who used malachite to make jewellery and amulets. Malachite has also historically been used as pigment in green paints. In the Middle Ages, Greeks and Romans made Malachite into amulets and was believed to protect against the "Evil Eye". Russian czars used Malachite for in the paneling of their castles and as inlay work.
