Malachite is usually banded and may have eye-like rings, these markings are known as "peacock's eye". Ancient Egyptians as early as 4000 BC used malachite pharaos wore malachite on their heads to increase their wisdom. Ancient Egyptians also ground it into powder to make eyeshadow. Greeks and Romans, who used malachite to make jewellery and amulets. Malachite has also historically been used as pigment in green paints. In the Middle Ages, Greeks and Romans made Malachite into amulets and was believed to protect against the "Evil Eye". Russian czars used Malachite for in the paneling of their castles and as inlay work.
